Annual Just Nuisance Birthday Walk
Every year, as close to the 1st of April as possible, the picturesque streets of historic Simon’s Town come alive with the sound of paws and laughter as we gather to celebrate the birthday of the legendary Great Dane, Just Nuisance. This much loved event invites dog owners and their furry companions to join us for a commemorative walk, complete with a parade, entertainment, and prizes, all in honour of this iconic canine figure.
The Tradition Continues
The annual commemorative walk pays homage to Able Seaman Just Nuisance, a larger-than-life Great Dane who aside from making history, captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike during his time in Simon’s Town. Each year, we come together to celebrate his spirit and legacy, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among dog lovers and history enthusiasts.
A Parade of Pooches
The festivities kick off with a lively parade through the charming main road of Simon’s Town, led by a marching band. Owners proudly walk alongside their canine companions, showcasing their furry friends in all their glory. The walk culminates in Jubilee Square, where prizes are awarded, and birthday cake is shared in honour of Just Nuisance.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
As part of our commitment to giving back to the community, we ask participants to register for the walk and make an R50 donation (or more if you wish), with all proceeds going directly to the SPCA and TEARS. These organizations play a vital role in caring for animals in need, and we are proud to support their ongoing efforts through our annual event.
Fun for Everyone
In addition to the walk, participants can enjoy a pet-related market, entertainment, and opportunities to explore local businesses and attractions. The Nelson Mandela Artillery Pipes & Drums lead the procession with their stirring melodies adding to the festive atmosphere. Our Master of Ceremonies, Ward Councillor Simon Liell-Cock, guides us through the day’s activities with warmth and enthusiasm.
Join Us for a Day of Celebration
Registration opens at 09h00 at Long Beach Simon’s Town, with the walk commencing at 10h00. Along the 1,1km route, there is a watering hole for our four-legged friends, ensuring they stay hydrated and happy. We encourage all participants to show their support by donating prizes for entrants, contributing to goodie bags, or making a monetary donation to our beneficiary organizations.
As we gather once again to celebrate the life of Just Nuisance, we invite you to join us for a day of fun, friendship, and furry companionship. Pay a visit to one of our many pet friendly establishments – stay a while and soak up the ambience of our special town. By coming together as a community, we honour the legacy of this beloved canine while supporting the important work of the SPCA and TEARS. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of animals in need while creating cherished memories in the heart of Simon’s Town.
